First, Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran popped up in Boston at the Irish pub The Dubliner on St. Patrick’s Day.
Then Friday, he took over downtown Ipswich to give an impromptu concert and film a music video in a pop-up Irish pub called The Old Phone dedicated to a new song on what’s it’s like to reconnect with your old friends and memories on your old phone.
But the “Shape of You” and “The A Team” singer didn’t pass by the area without popping up to Cape Ann this past weekend.
Sheeran spent time Saturday shooting footage at the family-owned Cape Ann Lanes/Laneside Pub & Brewery on Gloucester Avenue.
Co-owner Nic Pszenny said Sunday some of Sheeran’s production people had visited the bowling alley earlier in the week to scope out the spot. He said when staff flipped on the alley’s “cosmic lights” “they were into it.”
Pszenny, who co-owns the popular candlepin bowling, pub and brewery business with his wife, Caitlin, and uncle, Jim Fontiero, said he found Sheeran “very friendly.” He said Sheeran was intrigued by candlepin bowling, which is popular in New England, because he had never seen it before.
He said they are excited to see their place in the final video.
Mayor Greg Verga, who is guitar and bass player in his own right, and his wife Kellie, also got to meet the popular British pop star and said that the bowling alley was not Sheeran’s only stop on Cape Ann.
“It was great to get a behind-the-scenes look and meet Ed while he was in Gloucester filming,” Verga said. “I’m glad he had the chance to visit places like Cape Ann Lanes, Newell Stadium and The Vista. It’s nice to see some of Gloucester’s favorite spots featured. Kellie and I were thrilled to meet him and I was excited to gift Ed a city seal lapel pin to remember us by.”
